Futuristic floor

Developed by the team at Walt Disney Imagineering, the HoloTile Floor is a groundbreaking technology that enables movement within virtual and augmented reality environments without the user physically leaving their position. The system consists of a grid of small modules that move independently, creating the sensation of walking in any direction—similar to a treadmill, but with complete freedom of movement.

As the user begins to move, the floor automatically adjusts in the opposite direction, keeping the person centered on the platform while maintaining a full perception of motion. This innovation removes physical space limitations in immersive experiences and has the potential to transform applications in entertainment, professional training, simulations, and more.

The mind behind the project is Lanny Smoot, a Disney Imagineer with over 25 years of experience and more than 100 registered patents. Recognized for his technological contributions, Smoot became the second Disney employee to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (the first being Walt Disney himself).

Despite its advancement, the HoloTile is still in an experimental stage, with no confirmed timeline for public release or practical application in Disney parks. Like many of the company’s projects, it may remain in development for years—being refined or even shelved—reflecting a strong commitment to experimentation and continuous innovation.
